February 9, 2023 (Investorideas.com Newswire) New research has revealed that the best-selling Mario Sports video game is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
Casino and entertainment site CasinoAlpha.co.nz conducted the research using data from Nintendo and Video Game Sales Wiki to find the number of copies sold worldwide of every sports-related Mario video game.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which launched in 2017 on the Nintendo Switch game console, was revealed to have sold 52 million copies worldwide with a revenue of over $2.04 billion. The multiplayer online video game was launched just a little under two months after the Nintendo Switch release in March 2017.
Following at second place is Mario Kart Wii from 2008 with 37.4 million copies sold and a revenue of $1.4 billion. The release of the game took place two years after the Nintendo Wii game console was launched in 2006.
In third place is Mario Kart DS, which released on the handheld Nintendo DS game console in 2005. It was revealed to have sold 23.6 million copies worldwide with a revenue of $925 million.
Mario Kart 7 took fourth place with a total of 18.97 billion copies sold and $783 million in revenue. It released on the Nintendo 3DS game console in 2011, a modernised version of the original Nintendo DS from 2004.
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games has ranked fifth with a total of 13.06 million copies sold. It was the first Mario game made available to both the Nintendo Wii and DS game consoles in 2007 and the first game on the Mario & Sonic Olympic series. The second instalment Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games followed two years later and has ranked at ninth place with 6.99 million copies sold worldwide.
A spokesperson for the CasinoAlpha.co.nz addressed: “Mario has always been an iconic figure in the gaming world, and the data shows how popularity of the franchise has continued to grow. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Nintendo Switch saw a 514.657% increase in copies sold from its Mario Kart 8 predecessor on the Wii U. Saying that, games as old as Mario 64 from 1997 or Mario Kart: Double Dash!! from the original GameCube Nintendo console in 2003 have made it onto the list. These games have amassed a total of 185.97 million copies sold through the years and it just goes to show that the video game franchise is here to stay for many generations to come.”
